As you read through my reviews here and comments elsewhere, you will notice that I am continually on a quest for the greatest GCCB in New Mexico, and thereby the universe. While not the grail, the GCCB at the Owl Cafe gets anointed by both me and my gastronome wife the very best in Duke City. [Best of Breed in New Mexico is currently found at Sparky’s in Hatch.]

On a recent visit, Jane had the default style GCCB, and I had the Competition Style (bun, patty, cheese, and chiles — no other adulterants). Jane bit into her’s first, and moaned, ecstatically, “This is it.” My first taste was equally pleasurable. These creations are top drawer stuff.

Green Chile Cheese Fries

The accompanying green chile cheese fries were very tasty but flaccid. The chile is admirably piquant,and smoky, and the cheese suitably gloppy. The cole slaw was truly forgettable. The chocolate shake was among the best I have had in ABQ. When I told our delightful server that my previous fave shake was from 66 Diner, she replied that the 66 shake is a mere shadow of Owl’s. She was right.

Great Shake

This Owl Cafe is one of three (the other two failed) that were franchised by the world-famous Owl Bar and Cafe in San Antonio just south of Socorro, It is a chrome-and-glass diner built to mimic ’50s style. Comfortable, and with an extensive diner menu. Lots of tempting dishes. Alas, I will probably never sample the rest, because when I walk in the door, I will succumb to ABQ’s star GCCB. Competition style, of course.
