Outstanding Mexican Seafood in the High Desert of Santa Fe

 October 16, 2011

Jane’s Garmin found this delightful place on a Sunday afternoon after a  leisurely stroll through Santa Fe’s Wheelwright Museum on Museum Hill. Jane has an uncanny knack of finding really good places to eat in, and never has picked a bummer. Mariscos Costa Azul is yet another winner.

Mariscos Costa Azul Interior

Mariscos Costa Azul is a moderately priced, family-friendly, Santa Fe restaurant, specializing in authentic Mexican style seafood, using recipes from Puerto Vallarta. Their delicious, fresh and healthy seafood dinners range from $8 to $14. The interior is a kitschy splash of color and the servers are really pleasant and helpful. When we arrived, there was a large group having a birthday party. Noisy kids and adults, but they were having such a grand time that we didn’t care. We maybe should have joined them and added our voices to Las Mañanitas. Fun place.

Chips and Salsas

Complimentary Chips and Salsas

Our meal started with a complimentary basket of fresh tortilla chips and two small bowls of salsa: a red with the taste and texture of Pico de Gallo (very good) and a creamy concoction of avocado, mayonnaise, and jalapeños. This was a complete surprise, and is, by itself, a good reason to return. After my diet has delivered me to my goal weight, that is (four pounds to go :-)). I could spent an afternoon here eating these delights while sipping a Blue Moon on tap. Jane will have to drive, of course.

La Mariscada Caliente

La Mariscada Caliente

Jane ordered La Mariscada Caliente: (Trocitos de pescado, camaron, callo de acha, calamar y pulpo servidos con tortillas, lechuga, tomate y aguacate) Mixed grill of fish, shrimp, scallops, calamari and octopus combined Mexican style and served with corn tortillas. Our server told us that this dish is normally accompanied by rice and/or potatos, but since we are still on a strict weight-loss diet, she bad the kitchen substitute roasted green and red peppers and onions. This dish is utterly fabulous, and Jane kept muttering OMG throughout the meal. The seafood is prepared as a small dice, and the tastes blend amazingly well. The vegetables were perfect. This is as good a combination of seafood as I have tasted anywhere.

Grilled Tilapia

Grilled Tilapia with Chipotle Sauce

Many of my favorite dishes are available here, such as Mojarra Frita, Lonja de Pescado, Filete ala Veracruzana, and lots more. I decided to go off menu and asked our server to have the kitchen prepare me a plate of grilled tilapia filets with chipotle sauce and add the roasted peppers instead of the starches.  The fish filets were perfectly done: tasty and succulent. The chipotle sauce (served on the side in a bowl) was so good that we spooned some on the mixed grill and the peppers. Amazing. This sauce is a welcome change to New Mexican red chile (which I dearly love). This, after all, is Mexican food. The sauce had a lime tang that added a bit of sharpness and acidity to the puréed chipotles. Fantastic.Moderately piquant, the sauce left a fine finish on our palates. Our meal was accompanied by a small basket of scratch-made corn tortillas that were thick and very tasty.

This is yet another place that makes me want  to come back and eat my way through the menu. What the heck, it’s only a short drive from Corrales.

What others are saying….

Gil Garduño

“Costa Azul…The Blue Coast…the name evokes images of pristine sandy beaches, translucent blue waters, lush verdant jungles and brightly plumed birds. For Santa Fe diners, the name may also evoke involuntary salivation and pangs of hunger which can be quelled only by the incomparably fresh and delicious mariscos (seafood) at one of the City Different’s best Mexican restaurants, Mariscos Costa Azul.
BEST BETS: Horchata, Quesadillas de Camaron Y Carne, Tostada de Ceviche, Camarones Maneados, Pastel Tres Leches.”

Anne Hillerman (For the Journal)

“I love this place. From the complimentary chips and salsa to the golden homemade flan, Mariscos Costa Azul is a class act. The combination of friendly, informed service; a kitchen  that knows how to time your order; clean, colorful dining rooms; and a
family-friendly price scheme creates happy, steady customers. “

¡Buen provecho!
